Ghazaros (Lazar) Saryan (September 30, 1920 – May 27, 1998) was a distinguished Armenian composer and educator, renowned for his contributions to Armenian classical music. 

Early Life and Education

Born in Rostov-on-Don, Russian SFSR, Saryan was immersed in a culturally rich environment. He was the son of the celebrated painter Martiros Saryan and the grandson of esteemed writer Ghazaros Aghayan. In 1921, the family relocated to Yerevan, Armenia. Saryan’s musical journey began at the Yerevan State Conservatory (1934–1938), where he studied composition under Sargis Barkhudaryan and Vardges Talyan. He furthered his studies at the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow with Vissarion Shebalin. His education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Soviet army from 1941 to 1945. After the war, he resumed his studies at the Moscow Conservatory, learning from prominent composers such as Dmitri Kabalevsky, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Anatoly Nikolayevich Alexandrov, and graduated in 1950. 

Career and Contributions

Upon returning to Armenia, Saryan joined the faculty of the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, teaching orchestration and composition. He served as chairman of the Armenian Composers’ Union (1955–1956) and was appointed rector of the Conservatory in 1960, a position he held until 1986. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in modernizing the institution, establishing departments such as Chamber Ensemble and Wind Instruments, and introducing postgraduate studies and an organ class. Saryan mentored numerous prominent Armenian composers, including Tigran Mansurian, Ruben Sarkisyan, Vardan Adjemyan, and Ruben Altunyan. 

Saryan’s compositional oeuvre is characterized by its vivid orchestral colors and integration of Armenian folk elements with contemporary techniques. Notable works include his “Symphonic Poem” (1950), “Symphonic Images” (1956), “Festive Overture” (1957), “Serenade” (1959), “Armenia: Symphonic Panels on motifs by Martiros Saryan” (1966), and his “Symphony” (1980). His “Passacaglia” (1994) was performed at the Athens Music Festival in 1995, and “Armenia: Symphonic Panels” was showcased at the Pierre Boulez Contemporary Music Center in Metz, France, in 1991. 

Awards and Honors

Saryan’s contributions to music and education were widely recognized. He was honored as People’s Artist of the Armenian SSR (1972) and People’s Artist of the USSR (1990). He also received the Armenian State Prize in 1983. In recognition of his military service during World War II, he was awarded the Red Star Medal.
