Edvard Mirzoyan
Armenian Composer
Edvard Mik’aeli Mirzoyan (May 12, 1921 – October 5, 2012) was a distinguished Armenian composer and educator, renowned for his contributions to 20th-century classical music.
Early Life and Education
Born in Gori, Georgia, Mirzoyan began his musical education at the Yerevan Music School named after A. Spendiarov. He graduated from the Komitas State Conservatory in 1941, studying under composers Sargis Barkhudaryan and Vardges Talyan. His graduate thesis was the symphonic poem “Loretsi Sako.” Between 1946 and 1948, he furthered his studies in Moscow under Vissarion Shebalin and Nikolai Peyko.
Career and Contributions
After completing his studies, Mirzoyan returned to Yerevan, where he embarked on a prolific teaching career at the Komitas State Conservatory. He served as a professor from 1948 to 1965 and later as head of the composition department from 1972 to 1987. In 1956, he was elected president of the Armenian Composers’ Union, a position he held until 1991. Additionally, he presided over the Peace Foundation of Armenia.
Mirzoyan’s compositional output, though relatively small, is notable for its synthesis of Armenian folk elements with neoclassical structures. His acclaimed works include the “Symphony for Strings and Timpani” (1962), the “String Quartet” (1947), and the “Cello Sonata” (1967), which was premiered by the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.
