Khachatur Avetisyan

Armenian Composer

Khachatur Avetisyan (April 14, 1926 – June 27, 1996) was a distinguished Armenian composer, conductor, and virtuoso kanun player, celebrated for his profound contributions to Armenian folk and classical music.

Early Life and Education

Born in Leninakan (now Gyumri), Armenia, Avetisyan exhibited musical talent from a young age. He pursued his initial musical education at Yerevan’s R. Melikyan Music Academy and later at the Komitas State Conservatory, where he studied composition under the esteemed Edvard Mirzoyan.

Career and Achievements

Avetisyan’s mastery of the kanun—a traditional Middle Eastern zither—earned him international acclaim. In 1951, he became the first Armenian musician to receive the main prize at the International Youth Festival in Berlin. His pioneering efforts elevated the performance practice of the kanun, leading to the creation of a new performing school for the instrument, as well as a series of textbooks and numerous compositions. Notably, he composed two concertos for kanun and symphony orchestra, which have been performed on stages worldwide.

In 1958, Avetisyan was appointed the musical director of the Armenian State Dance Ensemble. During his nearly 15-year tenure, he composed many of the ensemble’s musical scores, including beloved pieces such as “Kakhardvats Tsaghikner,” “Caravan,” “Kakachner,” and “Kintoner.” His work with the ensemble showcased Armenian stagecraft to audiences in approximately 50 countries.

The late 1950s marked Avetisyan’s foray into songwriting, where his compositions bridged traditional Armenian troubadour styles with contemporary professional musical art. His songs, characterized by melodic richness and lyrical depth, garnered widespread love and recognition.

From 1974 to 1978, he served as the musical director of the Tatul Altunyan State Ensemble of Song and Dance, during which he developed several new programs that remained true to national traditions. In 1978, Avetisyan founded the Folk Instrumentals and Vocals Department at the Komitas State Conservatory, leading it until his death. Under his guidance, the department produced numerous illustrious performers and educators, significantly contributing to the preservation and education of national musical arts.

Compositions and Legacy

Avetisyan’s extensive body of work includes an oratorio dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, the “Gyumri” Requiem honoring earthquake victims, two ballets, scores for theater and film, and various orchestral suites. Some of his notable songs are “Im Anush Tavigh” (“My Sweet Harp”), “Makhmur Aghjik” (“Tender Girl”), “Asume en te” (“They Say That”), “Im Yegheg” (“My Cane”), “Vortegh Gtnem Kez” (“Where to Find You”), “Tsaghkats Baleni” (“Blossomed Cherry-tree”), “Siro Gisher” (“Love Night”), “Krunkner” (“Cranes”), “Kapuyt Trchun” (“Blue Bird”), and “Sirus Kspasem” (“I Await My Love”). These works continue to resonate on performance stages and among the Armenian populace, cementing his status as a maestro of Armenian musical art.

Avetisyan’s dedication to Armenian music has left an indelible mark, inspiring future generations and ensuring the perpetuation of Armenia’s rich musical heritage.
